How close is too close to have a tree near the house? It really depends on the type of tree. Water Oaks are the worst because they soak up all of the moisture and can break the house slab. Small trees are okay no matter how close. Of all of the large trees that are allowed near the house, the live oak is by far the least threatening. They only have surface roots. Trees don't break houses by lifting. Trees break houses by extraction of moisture. So those large trees that have lots of deep rooting can affect a house slab when there is a drought.
